Lab Testing Q&A

What is lab testing?

Lab testing involves checking a sample of your blood, urine, or tissue to assess health and look for signs of disease. These types of tests give Dr. Howard objective information about your health.

Dr. Howard uses lab testing to confirm or rule out a suspected diagnosis to explain your symptoms. He also performs lab testing for disease screening. Finding health problems before they turn into serious issues may prevent or delay disease-related complications.

What are some types of lab testing?

David L. Howard, MD, Ph.D., is a progressive hybrid practice serving as a one-stop-shop for medical care. The practice offers numerous in-office lab tests to provide the objective data needed to improve your health.

Types of lab testing include:

Complete blood count (CBC)

The CBC measures the number and types of blood cells in your blood. Dr. Howard performs this test to check for anemia, infections, and to screen for nutritional deficiencies.

Basic metabolic panel (BMP)

The BMP is a blood test that looks at your blood glucose, potassium, sodium, chloride, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and oxygen levels. The test allows Dr. Howard to screen for diabetes and check fluid and electrolyte balance.

Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP)

The CMP includes the same measures as the BMP, plus measures of liver enzymes, certain proteins, and blood calcium levels. The test assesses organ function and general health.

Lipid panel

The lipid panel checks your blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels to screen for high cholesterol. Having high cholesterol increases your risk of heart disease.

Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)

TSH is a blood test that assesses thyroid function. Your thyroid makes hormones that direct many vital functions, including your metabolism.

Hemoglobin A1C (A1C)

A1C is a blood test that measures your blood glucose levels over a period of time. Dr. Howard performs this lab test to screen for diabetes.

Urinalysis

A urinalysis assesses organ function and checks for early signs of kidney disease and diabetes. It’s also for a pregnancy test.

Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing

The office of David L. Howard, MD, Ph.D., provides in-office STD testing to screen for STDs.

What types of lab testing do I need?

Dr. Howard determines what type of lab testing you need after an appointment. Your testing needs depend on your symptoms (if any), age, health concerns, and disease risk factors.
